Think Global With Avocado

Consumers seldom have a problem paying more for avocado products – cue the chorus saying, “We know, guac is extra.” But while guacamole is a dip beloved by many, you may find yourself wondering what else you can do with all that avocado in the pursuit of more upcharge opportunities.

Today, we’re taking a trip around the world to see how avocados show up in different global cuisines and how you can easily translate those tasty items to your menu.

ASIA

First stop, Asia, where the love for avocados is booming. We’re seeing avocado mentions across Asian menus grow by 5.3% in the past year, with sushi accounting for two-thirds of that growth.1 Which makes sense; the delicious, creamy, fresh flavor and texture of avocado pairs perfectly with the salty, fatty notes in sushi dishes. Sushi-inspired menu items like sushi bowls or specialty rolls give you the creative ability to pair avocado with bold Asian-inspired flavors.

But sushi isn’t the only Asian dish that is seeing a spike in avocado usage. Avocado is mentioned across 44% of all Asian menus.Asian-inspired menu items, like smoked chicken egg rolls or Vietnamese banh mi sandwiches, are tasty ways of remixing classic Asian dishes with avocado.

EUROPE

Next stop: Europe, where avocado consumption may not be the biggest, but patterns are evolving, and we’re seeing classic and straightforward avocado dishes, like avocado toast, find their way into French cuisine.2

If you’re looking to further meld your menu’s European dishes with avocado, don’t hesitate to think across dayparts. Add some avocado into a French croissant egg bake for your breakfast menu or dice up avocado and mix it into a Mediterranean tabouli salad as a tasty side or lunch option.

SOUTH AMERICA

We’ll end in South America. You might think of Latin dishes and go to the classic taco, and while tacos are tasty, let’s dig deeper into the cuisine.

Avocado has a rich, fatty flavor, so it’s essential to pair it with dishes that have some acidity to create a balanced dish. Try adding some avocado to a Peruvian tuna ceviche made with tangy onions and bright tomatoes or leverage South American flavors like smokey, roasted peppers and crisp, sweet jicama to create a Latin market-inspired salad

Next time you find yourself looking for more flavor inspiration, think internationally; there is so much you can do when you pair two unlikely dishes.
